About the National Open University of Nigeria

The National Open University of Nigeria operates undergraduate and post graduate programmes for distance learning odl applicants. The current Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Nigeria NOUN is Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu. The facilities allow students work and learn at the same time, through part and full time programmes at the National Open University of Nigeria.

As at 2017, the Registration fee for both new and returning students of NOUN Student Portal is N6,000 (Six thousand Naira only). Read the full Fee schedule below. Faculties in the Open University include Agricultural Sciences, Arts, Education, Health Sciences, Law, Management sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences and the Access/General Studies Faculty.

The National Open University of Nigeria has two semesters – 1st semester and 2nd semester – and operates study centers across the 6 geo-political zones in the country, including the 36 states with multiple study centres in Lagos and Abuja.

With school fee schedules which are more affordable than other Universities and flexible study options, the school has 254,000 active and registered students, according to the Vice Chancellor.

The vice chancellor, along with other members of the management team is a member of council and a principal officer of the University. Most courses at the National Open University of Nigeria are accredited by the National Universities Commission. Note for intending Law students: In late 2017, the Universities Commission NUC suspended admission into the National Open University of Nigeria Law programme, citing issues with the Council for Legal Education (CLE). The National Open University however offers a wide range of courses from BSc in Mass Communication to Masters in Public Administration. NOUN and NTI: The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval to the National Teachers Institute (NTI) to run its degree programmes in affiliation with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The approval will enable enlisted students of the NTI degree programmes and other stakeholders of the institute to pursue their career without issues.

NOUN Students can now participate in NYSC and Nigerian Law School: The Nigerian Senate recently amended the law establishing the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to enable graduates of the institution participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme and the Law school. This means that graduates of the institution are now eligible to receive NYSC Certificates and can now be called to Bar.

Procedure for Change of Programme at National Open University of Nigeria:

  • Download pdf form for change of program
  • Generate 5000 naira remita from remita.net
  • Pay in the nearest bank
  • Fill, submit the form printed out with the remita print out from bank, and necessary credential to the study center.

Change in Course Codes for some NOUN courses: In line with National Universities Commission (NUC) requirements, the codes and/or titles of some courses in various Faculties in National Open University of Nigeria have been changed. Current students are advised to view the list here and register accordingly.

Suspended Courses at NOUN: The National Open University of Nigeria Management has approved the suspension of the under-listed programmes in line with the directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC):
•    B. Aquaculture and Fisheries Management
•    B. Sc Financial Mathematics
•    B. Sc Data Management

Information for intending students of National Open University of Nigeria:

  1. Applicants from last semester should refill the application form provided the form is still open.
  2. Applicants who wish to change programme should return to the form and refill application form, select the new programme. Applicants can have access to their application form provided matric number isn’t issued.
  3. Applicants/Students who have matric number and wish to change programme should apply for the change of programme. There is a change of programme fee of 5000 Naira. The procedure for programme change can be accessed at http://nouedu.net/announcements/procedure-change-program
  4. Students who have registered for 2017 2nd Semester but are unable to login should have their student login reset at the study centre.
